What is a tamper-evident closure?

A tamper-evident closure is a packaging feature designed to indicate whether a container has already been opened for the first time. On buckets and cups, this feature often consists of a tear-off tab, tamper-evident ring or another integrated element of the lid or closure system.

When the container is opened for the first time, the designated tamper-evident feature must be removed, broken or permanently altered. This provides visible evidence of first opening: if the feature is no longer intact, this may indicate that the packaging has already been opened.

Tamper-evident closures are particularly common for packaging used for food, cosmetics and chemical or technical products where it is important to be able to identify whether the packaging has previously been opened.

Important: A tamper-evident closure should not be confused with completely tamper-proof packaging. Its primary purpose is to make a previous first opening visible or detectable. The leak-tightness of a container must also be assessed separately.

Many of our buckets and cups are equipped with a tamper-evident closure as standard. The specific design of the tamper-evident feature may vary depending on the container-lid system.

Whether a particular bucket or cup is equipped with a tamper-evident closure can be found in the information provided on the respective product detail page.

Tamper-evident closures – function and meaning at a glance

Feature What does it mean? Practical significance
Basic function A tamper-evident closure makes a previous first opening of the packaging visible or detectable. The user can check whether the designated tamper-evident feature is still intact.
Design On buckets and cups, tamper evidence is often provided by a tear-off tab, tamper-evident ring or a comparable integrated closure feature. The specific design depends on the respective container-lid system.
First opening When the packaging is opened for the first time, the designated feature is removed, broken or permanently altered. A previous first opening can therefore become visible or detectable.
Tamper evident The term tamper evident means that the packaging provides visible or detectable evidence of a possible previous opening. It does not mean that the packaging is completely tamper-proof.
Leak-tightness A tamper-evident closure alone does not indicate whether a packaging system is liquid-tight or gas-tight. Tamper evidence and leak-tightness must be assessed separately.
Typical applications Tamper-evident closures are commonly used for packaging for food, cosmetics and chemical or technical products. They allow a simple visual check of the tamper-evident feature.
Product selection The design of the tamper-evident closure may vary depending on the bucket, cup and lid system. Product-specific information can be found on the respective product detail page.

Important information

A tamper-evident closure provides evidence of first opening – it does not make packaging completely tamper-proof. An intact feature can indicate that the designated first-opening mechanism has not yet been activated.

Properties such as liquid-tightness, gas-tightness or suitability for specific filling products and applications are independent of the tamper-evident function and must be assessed for the respective packaging system.
