Often heard – but what exactly are PFAS?

From 12 August 2026 onwards, initial key provisions of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will apply. These include, among other topics, requirements related to certain substance groups such as PFAS, which may introduce additional regulatory requirements depending on the specific packaging application.

Bikapack continuously monitors regulatory developments and takes applicable legal requirements into account within its product selection and supplier evaluation processes.

In addition, we are currently building a structured database for supplier, specification and compliance documentation in order to provide available documents to our customers on request as efficiently and transparently as possible in the future.

The provision of such information is based on the documentation and data currently available and supplied by upstream suppliers, manufacturers or partners.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances)
Background information on regulatory developments and restrictions within the European Union.
Certain PFAS compounds are increasingly becoming the focus of European chemicals and packaging regulation due to their specific chemical properties and high persistence.

Area Typical applications Regulatory and scientific background
Typical applications Grease-resistant paper and board packaging, fibre-based coatings as well as water- or dirt-repellent surface treatments. Certain PFAS substances are characterised by high chemical stability and persistence and may remain in the environment and material cycles for extended periods.
Health and environmental aspects Depending on the specific substance group, application and exposure, PFAS may be assessed differently. Scientific and regulatory discussions include topics such as environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and potential effects on various health-related parameters. Individual PFAS substances continue to be evaluated by regulatory authorities.
EU regulation Gradual restrictions, substance evaluations and substitution strategies. Within the framework of REACH, the PPWR and additional European legislation, the EU increasingly pursues strategies for the minimisation and substitution of certain PFAS applications.

Notes

  • PFAS are a key topic within European chemicals and packaging regulation.
  • Regulatory requirements continue to evolve and may differ depending on material category and application.
  • Where available, our suppliers provide corresponding compliance documents, specifications or substance-related information.
  • Please always refer to the specific product information and intended application requirements.
