Category Occurrence Health assessment / regulatory background
Typical applications Component of certain plastics and epoxy resins, for example in internal coatings of metal cans and food containers. Historically used to enhance durability and heat resistance; increasingly substituted in many applications.
Health aspects Can bind to estrogen receptors. May mimic hormonal activity and interfere with endocrine processes; unborn children and young children are considered particularly sensitive; possible effects on immune system development, fertility, metabolic processes (e.g. insulin resistance), and cardiovascular function.
EU regulation Strict migration limits and specific use restrictions. Particularly regulated in food contact materials; numerous applications within the EU are now required to be BPA-free.

Notes

  • BPA is subject to strict limits under EU food contact legislation.
  • Sensitive consumer groups (infants and children) are a particular focus of regulatory assessment.
  • Many manufacturers have already transitioned to BPA-free alternatives.
  • Please always refer to the specific product documentation and declaration of conformity.
