Often mentioned – but what exactly are Phtalates?

Phthalates are chemical compounds that have primarily been used as plasticizers and are now subject to strict regulatory restrictions within the EU due to potential health concerns. None of the products offered in our shop contain regulated phthalates.

Phthalates (e.g. BBP, DBP, DIBP)
Background on regulatory restrictions within the EU.
Certain phthalates are classified as toxic to reproduction and are therefore heavily restricted or prohibited in many applications.

Category Occurrence Health assessment / regulatory background
Typical applications Plasticizers in plastics; in some cases used in adhesives, sealants, printing inks or coatings. Increase flexibility of materials but may migrate under certain conditions.
Health aspects Particularly relevant to male reproductive health. Reduced fertility, hormonal disruption during fetal development, impaired testicular development and sperm quality; possible effects on testosterone production as well as liver function and lipid metabolism.
EU regulation Several phthalates classified as SVHC substances. Strict restrictions, particularly in food contact materials and consumer-related applications under REACH.

Notes

  • Relevant phthalates are regulated under European chemicals legislation (REACH).
  • Particularly low migration and use limits apply in food contact materials.
  • Our suppliers provide the corresponding declarations of conformity and negative declarations.
  • Please always refer to the specific declaration of conformity of the product concerned.
