Can filled buckets and cups be shipped by parcel service?

We generally advise against shipping filled buckets and cups by parcel service or post. Parcel transport can involve considerable impact, drop, compression and tipping loads for which a bucket or cup, including its closure system, is not automatically designed.

Even a container that remains securely closed and leak-proof during normal storage is therefore not automatically suitable for shipping as a filled parcel. Dynamic loads during transport may, for example, cause lids to loosen, containers to deform or packaging to become damaged.

Particular care is required with liquid, heavy or sensitive filling products. Shipping suitability must always be assessed for the complete system consisting of the container, closure, filling product, filling weight, fill level, as well as the inner and outer packaging.

If shipping by parcel service is nevertheless intended, we strongly recommend testing the complete shipping system under realistic transport conditions using the actual filling product and observing the packaging and transport conditions of the respective carrier.

For filled buckets and cups, we generally recommend secured palletised transport by freight carrier. This allows the containers to be combined into a stable load unit and can significantly reduce direct mechanical loads on individual packaging units.

Depending on the filling product, additional legal or transport-related requirements may apply independently of the suitability of the container.

Shipping packaging Suitable inner and outer packaging as well as secure fixation of the container are particularly important. Palletisation, intermediate layers, stretch wrapping and appropriate load securing can stabilise the containers as a single load unit.

We recommend shipping filled buckets and cups on pallets by freight carrier and generally advise against parcel shipping. Leak-tightness under normal conditions of use does not automatically mean that a container and its closure are also suitable for the dynamic loads encountered during parcel transport.

If parcel shipping is nevertheless intended, we recommend realistic shipping tests using the actual filling product, the intended closure system and the complete inner and outer packaging. The transport conditions of the respective carrier and any specific regulations applicable to the filling product must also be observed.
